Three Generations of Silk: The Gulatis Story

Before the highways, before the malls, there was a bolt of silk on a wooden counter on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. Sixty years and three generations later, Gulatis remains what it began as: a house that believes the cloth does the talking.
The house rule
Every fabric that enters our sixteen outlets is chosen by hand — weighed between the fingers, held to the window light, draped over a forearm. If it does not fall right, it does not stay.
From the metre to the wardrobe
We began as fabric merchants, and the by-the-metre counter is still the heart of the house. Today our ready-to-wear — baju kurung, kebaya, kaftan, jubah — is cut from the same bolts we sell by the metre, finished for the modest wardrobe.
